    Today’s market is a Back-to-School Street Party! Some items available will include: tomato pies, various breads, watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, corn, raspberries, green beans, squash, zucchini, cabbage, potatoes, cucumbers, onions and bell peppers.     3.) 14th Annual UofL Geriatric Health Care Symposium is next month

    Sept. 19, 7:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Seelbach Hilton, 500 S. Fourth St.

    The annual symposium provides up-to-date training and skills in geriatric care for health care providers and all interested in the care of elders. Featured speakers include: Dr. Kenneth Schmader, chief, division of geriatrics, Duke University Medical Center; Dr. Todd Semla, national PBM clinical pharmacy program manager–U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs; and Dr. Michael Malone, medical director, Aurora Health Care-Senior Services and the VNA of Wisconsin.

    4.) Weigh to Wellness for Fall Semester to begin

    Sept. 2, noon to 12:45 P.M., Porter Bldg. (formerly CEHD), Room 106

    Employees, retirees, their spouses/QA free

    Weigh to Wellness is a 12-week class that promotes healthy lifestyle changes through integrating optimal health behaviors into your everyday life. Each week the class will begin with a weigh-in, followed by an educational session on topics ranging from nutrition to physical activity and healthy lifestyle change.     5.) Cooper/Clayton smoking cessation class scheduled

    Aug. 29, noon, Brown Cancer Center, Krista Loyd Resource Room

    Free

    Thirteen-week, one hour smoking cessation program combines nicotine gum, patches or lozenges with support and skills training in a supportive group setting. First six weeks of nicotine products are free, participant responsible for last four weeks of products.

    8.) UofL Alert testing to take place today

    Aug. 28. 10 a.m.

    In preparation for the Fall Semester, the university will be testing the UofL Alert system today at 10 a.m. This test will include the RAVE text and email alert, the Informacast VOIP phones, the Outdoor Warning Sirens and the UofL web page. If you do not receive an alert, please contact Dennis Sullivan at dennis.sullivan@louisville.edu.

    11.) Faculty: Learn how one instructor flipped the classroom and lived to tell the tale

    Sept. 9, noon to 2 p.m., Delphi Center Lab, Ekstrom Library

    Join your colleagues in this session presented by Jeff Hieb as he shares his efforts to understand the flipped classroom model, to implement it in engineering mathematics classes, and to evaluate its efficacy. During the session the instructor will share his motivation for experimenting with this pedagogical model as well as describe technology and class activities he used to implement a flipped class. Lunch is served, so pre-registration is required.

    12.) Deadline extended for the Paul Weber Award for Departmental Excellence in Teaching

    There’s still time to submit your application for the 2014-2015 Paul Weber Award. The deadline for stage one applications has been extended to Sept. 5. Completing a three-page application, cover page, and obtaining your dean’s endorsement could help your department win $30,000 in recognition of teaching excellence. Questions about the award or application process can be directed to John Whitney, program coordinator, at 852-7623.

    13.) Infant Scientists Wanted

    Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Saturday appointments available upon request), Davidson Hall 314

    The UofL Infant Cognition Lab (Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences) is conducting several studies on infant face perception. Infants who are between 3 and 8 months old with normal vision and hearing are invited to participate. Participation involves one brief visit to campus.     16.) Family and Geriatric Medicine

    Karen Krigger, MD, professor, UofL department of family and geriatric medicine, presents It’s Back—Heroin: Resurgence of an Old Problem with a New Look. She will discuss the reasons behind the resurgence, its prevalence, definition as an opiod use disorder, modes of administration, signs and symptoms of acute intoxication, as well as atypical presentations and wound botulism. CME category 1 is available for both AAFP and ACCME accreditation and a continental breakfast will be provided.

    17.) Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Health

    Aug. 29, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Health Science Center basement auditorium

    Mary Sterrett, MD, PGY-4, will present Periviability: Drawing the line. Changing our attitudes, but not our interventions. She will discuss the use of the NICD-NRN prognostic calculator for periviable deliveries and educate the audience about the obstetrical interventions used to improve periviable birth outcomes and encourage the university to consider guidelines utilizing a prognostic calculator for clinicians to utilize during acute counseling of patients.
