    It’s Move-In Day, one of the busiest days on the UofL academic calendar. Seventy five percent of incoming freshmen will be living in first-year residence halls this year, the highest number in UofL history. That’s more than 2,000 freshmen making the move into Miller, Unitas, Threlkeld, Community Park, Kurz and Louisville Hall. For updates, tune in to 93.9 FM The Ville beginning at 7 a.m.

    6.) NIH COBRE planning meeting is today

    Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) NIH PAR-14-035: The COBRE program promotes innovative research training in basic and clinical biomedical and behavioral research. Interested faculty mentors and PIs will meet to discuss possible submission of a proposal. The university will only have one application.     7.) Openings remain to attend Delphi U online Fall 2015

    Openings remain for the fall offering of Delphi U Online – register now. The next offering of an eight-week online course to prepare instructors to teach online will launch on September 14 and conclude November 8. Over the eight weeks, participants will learn two primary concepts: first, what it is like to be an online learner, and second, how to effectively teach online. This course is made up of eight separate modules that are covered one week at a time.

    8.) HSC ExCITE grant informational is today

    Do you have an idea for a product that could improve patient care or enhance human health? If so, UofL has a new grant program to develop health-related, UofL technologies. The new UofL ExCITE hub offers proof-of-concept grant funding for a maximum of $200,000 per project. The pre-proposal deadline is August 31. For more details, the ExCITE Team will be holding a HSC Campus informational today. Refreshments will be served and please RSVP.

    9.) KCP offers free cancer screenings at Kentucky State Fair

    Aug. 20-30, 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Kentucky State Fair

    The Kentucky Cancer Program will be at the Kentucky State Fair again this year offering cancer screenings, education and referrals! FREE skin cancer screenings will be available each day, head and neck cancer screenings (sponsored by UofL Dental School) will be held on various days, and prostate cancer screenings will also be available.     10.) A few spaces left for GRE strategy session/lunch/practice exam

    There are only 20 of 42 spaces remaining for the upcoming GRE strategy session/lunch/practice exam to be held on Saturday, August 29. If you are interested in participating, please forward $20 to Psi Chi, 317 Life Sciences, Belknap Campus. Include “GRE,” your name and email, and sandwich selection: ham, turkey, corned beef or veggie. Once payment is received additional registration details will be emailed to you.

    12.) Asthma study in children and young adults

    A research study is being conducted under the direction of Dr. Nemr Eid and Dr. Scott Bickel to determine how an FDA-approved inhaled medication affects the small airways in asthma. This study is open to children and young adults 6-21 years old with a diagnosis of asthma. Subjects who qualify will receive $50 per visit (3 visits required), medication and undergo a special non-invasive pulmonary function test to measure small airway function.     13.) The Kentucky African American Encyclopedia

    Free for UofL faculty, staff and students

    Professor Gerald L. Smith, University of Kentucky, Professor Emerita Karen Cotton McDaniuel, Kentucky State University, and John A. Hardin, Western Kentucky University, will discuss the recent publication of “The Kentucky African American Encyclopedia,” hailed as an essential guide to the black experience in the Commonwealth. Co-sponsors Filson Historical Society and Muhammad Ali Center are members of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.
