    ·       VIDEO: Pentagon officials partnered with UofL and The McConnell Center to host the U.S. Army’s second annual Strategic Broadening Seminar (SBS), a month-long seminar solely focused on leadership development for a select group of officers, noncommissioned and civilian personnel. The seminar is designed to provide the next generation of Army leaders with the critical knowledge of how to assess a changing geopolitical landscape, needed when making future leadership decisions.     1.) Get your free tickets for the Grawemeyer Spirit Award

    Event Sept. 17, 11 a.m., The Louisville Palace; get tickets by Sept. 1

    UofL will pay tribute to Muhammad Ali in a free, public ceremony Sept. 17 as the legendary boxer receives the inaugural Grawemeyer Spirit Award. The prize marks the 30th anniversary of the Grawemeyer Awards. The Grawemeyer Spirit Award ceremony kicks off a months-long series of events, including lectures by Grawemeyer Award recipients. Ali and his wife, Lonnie, are scheduled to attend the ceremony. Reserve your tickets and find out about all the events here.

    3.) Fire up your core muscles with Ab Lab

    Tuesdays & Thursdays noon to 12:15 p.m.;  Get Healthy Now Wellness Center at Humana Gym

    Free for GHN Wellness Center members

    Summertime has arrived and it’s time to get those abs tight, toned up and stronger with Ab Lab. It’s the total core workout. In this class you will focus on basic abdominal work and lower back exercises. Equipment options that may be used include: the bosu balance trainer, stability balls, and weights. This class will help develop a toned physique and improve total body strength, while developing your core muscles.

    5.) Move-in Day is Wednesday

    Wednesday, August 19 is Move-in Day for first year students. Please be aware that traffic will be heavy in and around residence hall areas. Anticipate delays moving around campus that day. Please help us welcome our new class; it’s an exciting time for students and their families.

    6.) NIH COBRE planning meeting is Wednesday

    Aug. 19, 5 to 6 p.m., Room 123, KCCTRB, Room 123

    Faculty and staff: free

    Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) NIH PAR-14-035: The COBRE program promotes innovative research training in basic and clinical biomedical and behavioral research. Interested faculty mentors and PIs will meet to discuss possible submission of a proposal. The university will only have one application. If interested but unable to attend, contact Kathy Ward, assistant to the EVPRI.

    7.) Belknap ExCITE Grant informational is today

    Do you have an idea for a product that could improve patient care or enhance human health? If so, UofL has a new grant program to develop health-related, UofL technologies. The new UofL ExCITE hub offers proof-of-concept grant funding for a maximum of $200,000 per project. The pre-proposal deadline is August 31. For more details, the ExCITE Team will be holding a Belknap Campus informational today; see the HSC version here. Refreshments will be served and please RSVP.

    8.) Louisville Technology Festival: Over 70 and Connected

    Using technology to help older adults and their families and caregivers will be the focus of this free Louisville Technology Festival program sponsored by The Institute for Sustainable Health & Optimal Aging. Speaking will be Anna Faul, executive director of the institute; Joe Steier, president and CEO; Dianne Timmering, vice president of spirituality and legislative affairs, Signature Healthcare; John Reinhart, CEO, InnovateLTC; and Barbara Gordon, director of social services, KIPDA.
