DID YOU KNOW?
While the Speed Art Museum continues its three-year, $60 million renovation and expansion project adjacent to the Belknap Campus, its satellite space on East Market Street is holding special exhibitions and events. Local Speed is at 822 E. Market in NuLu. The Speed, which originally opened in 1927, is expected to reopen in early 2016. Get updates here.

Reminder for registrants: Please join the Delphi Center and Glen Garrett from iClicker for a session about iClicker/iClickerGo. iClicker is a tool that allows students to submit answers for in-class polling, and iClickerGo adds the convenience of using a smart phone or laptop as a substitute clicker.

3.) KCP to offer free cancer screenings at Kentucky State Fair
Aug 14 to 24, 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Free, public
UofL’s Kentucky Cancer Program will offer free cancer screenings at the Kentucky State Fair. KCP has teamed up with Anthem BCBS and the Kentucky Dermatological Association to offer skin cancer screenings and UofL’s dental school to offer head and neck cancer screenings. There will also be prostate cancer screenings Aug. 14 to 17 only. KCP will have the Incredible Colon exhibit setup in partnership with KentuckyOne Health. There will be a cancer prevention area along with a tribute banner for survivors to sign.

4.) Applications for the 2014-2015 GTA Academy due Aug. 26
The Graduate Teaching Academy is designed to assist Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) to develop knowledge, skills and excellence in classroom teaching. All graduate students are encouraged to apply. GTAs who are accepted into the academy and attend at least seven of nine sessions will receive a Graduate Teaching Academy certificate and be able to apply for travel funds for professional development. 5.) Green Tip: How to cater with care
In charge of providing food for a meeting or campus event? Consider the effects of your choices on people’s health, the environment and the local economy. Some things you can do: Seek healthier, fresher options and minimize environmental impact by serving less meat. Strive to purchase as much local, seasonal food as possible–there are area caterers who specialize in this. Avoid excessively packaged and individually wrapped foods. Provide a pitcher of tap water instead of bottled water.

10.) Health Science Educator I

The topic will be “A Leader’s Role in Addressing LGBT Health,” by Dr. John Davis. He will speak to how engaged leadership has the ability to integrate LGBT inclusion into education, patient care, faculty affairs and policies. This session aims to empower leaders, including students and practitioners, to ensure LGBT inclusion by providing a clinically relevant overview of LGBT health disparities and their cost to healthcare, increasing awareness of the current gaps in LGBT academic medicine, and outlining easy wins for leadership to integrate and evaluate LGBT initiatives at their own institutions.

11.) Health Science Educator II

The topic will be “Working with LGBT Patients: A practical, skills-based training for health professionals,” by Dr. John Davis. In this interactive workshop, Dr. Davis will present the LGBT and DSD-affected Curriculum Integration Objectives developed within the Association of the American Medical Colleges and provide practical examples of how they can be implemented into existing curriculum. Participants from various health professions (nursing, dental, medical) will have the opportunity to identify crucial skills needed in their given clinical setting, and develop profession-specific plans for implementation.
