Thunder Over Louisville: UofL parking garages not designed for assembly use
Parking & Transportation Services fields requests each year from the university community asking if permit holders will be permitted to view the air show and fireworks display on Saturday, April 21, from the roofs of the parking garages. The garages were not designed for assembly purposes and large gatherings. They were designed solely for parking cars. When vehicles are parked throughout the floors, they are parked in such a manner to evenly distribute the weight load. For purposes of assembling, people tend to move to the rails of the garage placing an enormous amount of weight at this one location. In addition to not being designed structurally for assembly use, the garages do not have adequate restrooms and other code requirements for large group gatherings. Garages will be available for permit parking only on Saturday, April 21. University Police and Security personnel will monitor the activity in the garages.
