    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    Tonight marks the 30th Annual Crawfish Boil at the Red Barn. The event, a spring rite of passage at UofL, boasts hundreds of pounds of crawfish and is one of the university’s longest-running social events. The cost is just $5 and it is open from 5 to 8 p.m. It is sponsored by the Student Activities Board and the Red Barn Alumni Association.

    Construction Traffic Alerts

    1.) Traffic patterns to be adjusted on Floyd Street for Red-White Spring Game

    April 17, 7 p.m. kickoff, Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium

    With road construction on Floyd Street near the Belknap campus, some traffic patterns will be adjusted into parking areas surrounding Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium for Friday’s 7 p.m. Red-White football spring game. Fans should consider alternate routes to avoid construction and travel delays, avoiding Floyd Street north of the stadium.

    2.) Construction to prevent left turns at Warnock, Floyd streets next week

    Construction in the intersection will force turn restrictions on Floyd Street and Warnock Avenue next week. Through traffic will be allowed, but left turns will be forbidden from all four directions at the intersection beginning Monday, April 20.     3.) Military Women presents ‘HerStory: See What I See—The Warriorhood of Women’

    April 23, 6 p.m., Red Barn

    Free; reservations requested

    Join the UofL Women’s Center and the Student Parent Association as they host women veterans at HerStory: See What I See—The Warriorhood of Women. This is a creative storytelling performance using various art mediums created by and from the storytelling of military women. The performances are sponsored in part by the Athena’s Sisters, a local women’s veterans group and the Looking for Lilith Theatre Company.

    iTech Xpress, your UofL technology store, now offers the Windows 8.1 Enterprise at Work for all university departments that participate in the Microsoft Campus Agreement. Faculty and staff may purchase a DVD for $10 and install the software on all departmentally purchased machines.     8.) UofL Kentucky Author Forum to air again

    The March UofL Kentucky Author Forum featuring legal expert Jeffrey Toobin interviewing author David Boies will be repeated Monday at 10 p.m. The forum was taped live March 24 at the Kentucky Center.

    9.) Funding application deadline extended for the 2015 Kentucky Pedagogicon

    Deadline to request funding extended to April 20

    The Delphi Center will provide funding for conference registration and mileage for up to 15 UofL faculty and staff members to attend this year’s 2015 Kentucky Pedagogicon in Richmond. Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis with preference given to UofL presenters and faculty. From 2011 to 2013, the Pedagogicon was part of the Kentucky Innovation Conference and is now a joint production of the CPE, the CPE Faculty Development Workgroup and Eastern Kentucky University.

    11.) Brown & Williamson Scholar Seminar: Ligand binding mechanisms and trypsin-like proteases

    Enrico Di Cera, MD, from Saint Louis University, will present a seminar as part of the Brown & Williamson Scholar Program. His research focuses on the structure, function, regulation, and engineering of trypsin-like proteases. The talk is titled Mechanisms of ligand binding: a critical appraisal. The chemistry department serves as host.

    12.) Paid UofL Sustainability Internships available in 2015-16

    Know students with a passion for advancing environmental, social and economic stewardship on campus? Please let them know that UofL’s Sustainability Council will again offer paid internships in 2015-16 (some available summer 2015). Interns work up to 10 hrs/wk on tangible projects developed with council supervision. Positions include: Bike Mechanic, Community Composting, Zero Waste and others. Interested students should contact UofL Sustainability Coordinator Justin Mog.

    13.) Renowned critical thinking scholar Dr. Stephen Brookfield featured at i2a Institute

    May 18-19, University Club

    Free for UofL faculty and staff

    In a new i2a Institute workshop, Dr. Brookfield explores how students learn to think critically and what methods teachers can use to support this learning. He will explain and demonstrate how instructors can help students uncover and check assumptions, explore alternative perspectives, and take informed action. This half-day session will focus on concepts presented in Dr. Brookfield’s 2012 book, Teaching for Critical Thinking: Tools and Techniques to Help Students Question Their Assumptions.

    Ms. Karen A. Collins will present her PhD thesis titled High-Precision Time-Series Photometry for the Discovery and Characterization of Transiting Exoplanets.  Collins studied under the guidance of Dr. John Kielkopf of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and discovered an exoplanet while during research for her PhD.
