    1.) Portfolio Day is Friday at Cressman Center

    April 17, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Cressman Center for Visual Arts, 100 E. Main St.

    Free, open to the public

    Check out the latest student work from the communication art and design program at the Hite Art Institute at their annual Portfolio Day. Fifteen students will showcase their work. Comments begin at 10 a.m., but guests can stop by at any point to view the work. For more information, contact Leslie Friesen.

    2.) 2015 Grawemeyer Award winners here this week

    Emotion and memory. School reform. Clan-based cultures. Christianity and racism. Recipients of the 2015 Grawemeyer Awards will discuss those concepts in free, public talks April 15-16 on Belknap Campus and at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The annual, $100,000 awards recognize world-changing ideas. Details here.

     

    3.) UofL Physicians host symposium on heart disease in women

    May 16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jewish Hospital Rudd Heart & Lung Center

    Free for students, residents and fellows; $25 community; open to the public

    Two of Louisville’s leading heart physicians will host a one-day symposium designed to provide the community, physicians, nurses and health professionals with up-to-date information on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women. The 2015 Louisville Symposium on Heart Disease in Women will feature presentations, case studies and panel discussions from leading experts.

    A few spots remain for the June offering of Delphi U. This free, 4½-day workshop offers faculty the chance to work with colleagues and Delphi Center staff to incorporate best practices when designing, revising, or delivering online courses.     5.) University password changes unavailable during PM for the next 2 Friday nights

    The University Password website will be unavailable due to an operating system upgrade during the regular Preventative Maintenance (PM) period, 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. for the next two Fridays, April 17 and April 24. Please note that other systems (e.g. Blackboard, email, instant messaging, PeopleSoft, ULink, data services, etc.) may also be taken offline during this time without notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this offline period may cause.

    7.) One more week to enter social justice research paper awards

    April 22, 6 p.m., Ekstrom Library Room 258

    The Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research is accepting entries for our 8th annual Social Justice Research Paper Awards. Students from any discipline are encouraged to apply. Cash awards will be given to writers of the best undergraduate and graduate papers on a social justice topic. Undergrads must use at least one book from the Braden Book Collection. Hard copies of papers must be submitted by April 22 at 6 p.m. Winners will be notified on Friday, May 8.

    10.) Green Tip: Spring is here, come garden with us

    Did you know that UofL has on-campus organic gardens where you can experience the thrill of turning tiny seeds into an abundance of fresh, free, hyper-local food? Staff and students are always welcome to get involved and faculty can use the gardens as sustainability teaching tools. It starts today at 3 p.m. with a spring planting at the Urban Studies Horticulture Zone (426 W. Bloom) or register for the Earth Day Workshop on sustainable growing at the Garden Commons (Cultural Center) April 22 at 3 p.m.

    Medicine Grand Rounds presents the 2015 Charles C. Smith Jr. Lecture featuring Jeffrey J. Glasheen, MD, professor of medicine and associate dean for clinical affairs–quality and safety education at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Glasheen will present 97,999 and Florence: Creating a Culture of Safety, focusing on the current state of patient safety, methods of improving patient safety, and developing a roadmap for creating a culture of patient safety.
