    1.) Green Tip: Offset budget cuts by eliminating waste

    Eliminating waste and inefficiency not only reduces UofL’s environmental impact, but can help save us from a budget shortfall. Consider these eco-friendly ways to cut costs: Print on both sides of a page. Serve tap water instead of bottled water and replace disposables with reusable mugs, utensils, plates, etc. Reduce our utility bill by shutting off faucets, lights, computers and equipment when not in use. Consolidate refrigerators. Buy only efficient, Energy Star electronics and appliances.

    2.) UofL to be featured on KET special report on parenting

    A UofL pediatrician and nursing director of the Center for Women and Infants will be featured in an upcoming KET report on parenting. The new KET Health Special Report “Safe and Sound: Raising Emotionally Healthy Children in a Stressful World” explores why social and emotional development is so important in the first years of life.

    3.) Student Advantage on its way; free to students

    May 21

    Microsoft has added a new program called Student Advantage that provides a free version of Office for students. It includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote. The program allows currently enrolled students to install Office on up to five devices, including PCs, Macs, phones or tablets. This program is available as part of the university’s participation in the Microsoft Campus Agreement . Notification will be sent to all students beginning May 21.

    4.) University-wide undergraduate research and community engagement symposium to be held

    April 15, 12:30 to 4 p.m., Shumaker Research Building
    The annual symposium will provide a forum where students can showcase research projects that build on and enrich faculty work across the disciplines.

    5.) Solar flight trials begin Friday

    April 18 (1st attempt) and April 25 (2nd attempt), 9 a.m. to noon, Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium

    Free

    The 2014 Mickey R. Wilhelm Solar Flight Competition will feature teams of students from the Speed School of Engineering. These teams have designed and built scale, solar-powered aircraft. Come cheer on these brave souls as they pit their ingenuity and will against the challenges of gravity, sustained flight and solar energy harvesting. Clouds and high wind cancel.

    6.) DTRA program manager to be on campus

    April 17, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., various locations

    Phil Tandy, PhD, program manager with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, will be on both the Belknap and HSC campuses to discuss opportunities with DTRA and to meet one-on-one with researchers.

    7.) HSC research forum to be held

    April 17, 4 p.m., Clinical and Translational Building, Room 101/102

    The Quarterly HSC Research Forum co-sponsored by the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation will address new initiatives and regulations from the NIH, changes to facilitate the grant procurement process at UofL and introduction of the UofL School of Medicine Clinical Trials Unit located in Suite 520 of the UofL Health Care Outpatient Center. A tour of the Clinical Trials Unit will immediately follow.

    8.) Parkinson’s disease symposium to be held

    May 8, 5 to 7:30 p.m., Conference Center, Rudd Heart and Lung Center, 220 Abraham Flexner Way

    University of Louisville Physicians will be hosting a symposium on Parkinson’s disease designed for patients and their families. The UofL Physicians Parkinson’s Disease Spring Symposium will feature speakers from the interdisciplinary team at UofL Physicians – Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders who will provide an overview of new developments in Parkinson’s disease and treatment options, with a focus on neuromodulation therapies.  The program also includes two breakout sessions and an “Ask the Experts” panel discussion.

    9.) Hold the date: Geriatrics healthcare symposium scheduled

    Mark your calendars for the University of Louisville 14th Annual Geriatrics Healthcare Symposium. Speakers, break-out sessions, CE credit offered. This symposium is for physicians, nurses, nursing home administrators, residents, students, staff and care providers.

    10.) Managing challenging student behavior workshop scheduled

    April 16, 3 to 4:30 p.m., Miller Information Technology Center, Room 201

    A workshop entitled “Managing Challenging Student Behavior” will be presented and is open to all faculty. The presenters are James Mardis, associate vice president and dean of students; Eli Karam, assistant professor, Kent School of Social Work; Dr. Kari Zahorik, associate professor, Campus Health Services; and Lt. Colonel Kenny Brown of public safety.
