Judith C. Owens-Lalude will discuss her new novel, Miss Lucy: Slave and Civil War Nurse, based on the life of Lucy Higgs Nichols. Owens-Lalude will make discuss Civil War medicine, read from her novel and re-enact Higgs’ life as a nurse for the 23rd Indiana Regiment. Bring your lunch, drinks will be provided. The Carnegie Center is a member of the Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

Kelly A. Ryan, associate professor at Indiana University Southeast, will discuss her book, Regulating Passion: Sexuality and Patriarchal Rule in Massachusetts 1700-1830, recently published by the Oxford University Press. Ryan investigates how men and women, both white and people of color, struggled for freedom and equality in the 18th century and early republic. The Carnegie Center is a member of the Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

6.) Flexible Spending Account: Use-it-or-lose-it
April 15 deadline to submit claims
If you have funds remaining in your flexible spending account from the 2013 plan year, you have until April 15 to submit final claims for reimbursement. You are reimbursed from money remaining from the 2013 plan year account. When your money for the 2013 plan year is gone, no more claims for services received during that plan year will be paid. Claims dated during the current plan year will be paid from money in your new plan year account.

7.) Computer repair closes permanently April 30
This change only impacts repair for personally purchased computer hardware. Servicing of university owned equipment is not affected by this change. Repairs in progress will be completed but no additional equipment will be accepted for repair after this date. Help with malware removal, passwords and other software related issues will remain available from the iTech Connect office located on the lower level of Miller Information Technology Center.

9.) Faculty: Funding deadline for the 2014 Kentucky Pedagogicon extended to April 15
The Delphi Center will provide funding for conference registration and mileage for up to 20 UofL faculty and staff members to attend this year’s 2014 Kentucky Pedagogicon in Richmond, Ky. Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis with preference given to UofL presenters and faculty. From 2011 to 2013, the Pedagogicon was part of the Kentucky Innovation Conference and is now a joint production of the CPE, the CPE Faculty Development Workgroup and Eastern Kentucky University.

10.) Free online training on active shooter events available
Active shooter and stabber events continue to plague our country and prevention is very difficult. In order to be prepared for active shooters and other perpetrators you must be ready to “Run, Hide and Fight.” FEMA has prepared a free online training course for active shooter events.
