“Mr. Jefferson and the Giant Moose: Natural History Early in America” involves Thomas Jefferson, Count and naturalist George-Louis Leclerc Buffon, and a large, dead moose. Jefferson obsessed over this moose to help quash French arrogance that claimed that life in America was degenerate, weak and feeble. Jefferson showed that the fledgling America republic was equal to well-established Europe. Natural history took on political overtones. Supported by Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.
