    Budget Meeting is Monday

    Feb. 8, noon, Floyd Theater, Student Activities Center

    UofL President James Ramsey will hold a meeting to discuss Gov. Bevin’s budget proposal and its effect on higher education on Monday, Feb. 8, at noon in the Floyd Theater of the Swain Student Activities Center. The forum is open to students, faculty and staff.

    As a courtesy to the university and the community, the Office of the Vice President for Community Engagement has a portal that showcases summer youth opportunities provided by UofL. If your unit or department offers a summer enrichment program that is open to the general public and would like to be included in the listing for Summer 2016, please fill out the Summer Youth Opportunity Form no later than February 22. Listings will go live no later than March 1.

    The salad bowl may not seem as exciting as the Super Bowl, but there are definitely ways to keep things interesting. It’s a great way to balance the excesses of the weekend, both in terms of personal health and the health of the planet. Not every salad, for example, needs to revolve around lettuce.     The Pathology Core Research Lab is presenting a free seminar for research labs. The seminar will discuss tissue collection, grossing, orientation, freezing, sectioning, and the cryostat.     13.) Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)

    March 1

    The SROP provides UofL undergraduate students who would like to know more about graduate-level education at the university, with a 10-week (May 31-August 5, 2016) research-intensive experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. Mentors will provide students with individualized research projects. All UofL departments with graduate programs will be supported. Students should be, preferably, in their sophomore or junior year of study. The deadline is March 1, 2016.

    14.) PLAN offers workshop on the IRB process

    Feb. 10, 2 to 3 p.m., Room 105, Houchens Building

    The workshop will review the foundation of the IRB and the protection of human subjects in research. The presenter will discuss the three levels of IRB submissions that include exempt, expedited, and full board review, and will also cover issues of informed consent and risk/benefit analysis. Attendees will have opportunities to ask questions pertaining to personal research interests and IRB expectations.     15.) CODRE and SIGS Diversity Grant for Graduate Students

    CODRE and the School for Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies (SIGS) are offering grants to support UL graduate student research targeting populations which are the focus of the commission – diverse, underserved, under-represented and vulnerable populations. Any student research project submitted for funding must have UofL faculty supervision and appropriate institutional approval. Research projects can come from any discipline represented at UL.

    CODRE and the Office of Research & Innovation offer diversity grants for minority undergraduate students conducting research in the areas of science, technology, engineering and/or math. This funding initiative will be focused on support of UofL minority undergraduate student conducting research in the area of science, technology, engineering or math.     17.) Green Tip: Catch RecycleMania!

    UofL is competing against schools across the country to see who can reduce waste and recycle the most Feb. 7 to April 2! You can help the Cards to victory by: 1. Avoiding disposable items as much as possible – bring your own mug, bottle, bag, etc.; and 2. Making sure you always recycle – which is amazingly easy at UofL! All types of plastic, paper, cardboard, metal, and glass go into the same single-stream recycling bins all over campus. Don’t think twice, just drop it in the bin, y’all!

    The topic for this year’s Boehl Distinguished Lecture in Land Use Policy is Learning Both Directions: How Improved Federal – Local Land Use Coordination Can Quiet the Call for Federal Lands Transfers.
