Rivera Martinez is the founder and director of Consejo Nacional Urbano Campesino (CNUC). Through CNUC, she has worked to protect peasantsʼ rights and build community-based autonomous projects in Mexico.
Rivera Martinez will join a panel of women from a variety of fields and roles to discuss women’s work. Other panelists include Lt. Col. Tina Riddle of the Kentucky Army National Guard, Diane Pecknold, a mother and professor, and Elmer Lucille Allen, a retired chemist and social activist.
The event also will feature an art piece titled Revisiting the Dinner Party: A Place at the Table created by Gabrielle Mayer and students from the Hite Art Institute to honor women leaders who have inspired social change, and will include dinner, music and a women’s history trivia contest for men. Participants also will be able to purchase items from groups like Made by Survivors, a national nonprofit that works with survivors of sexual and labor slavery throughout the world.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, though reservations are recommended at Louisville.edu/peacc.
International Women’s Day events are sponsored by the Commission on the Status of Women, Anne Braden Institute, PEACC, Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, The Women’s Center and the Red Barn.
In addition to the panel discussion, Rivera Martinez will give a lecture about women’s, peasant and labor struggles in southern Mexico and beyond. Her talk is 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. March 8, in Room 100, Bingham Humanities Building on Belknap Campus.
