LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dr. Jeffrey P. Callen, chief of the Division of Dermatology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, has been named the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient by the Medical Dermatology Society.
The award will be presented at the society’s annual meeting Feb. 3 in New Orleans.
The award is given in recognition of a lifetime providing inspired patient care as a medical dermatologist, mentoring of future dermatologists and research to advance dermatology, said Tracy Martin, manager of membership and association services for the society.
“It’s nice to be recognized by your peers,” Callen said. “It is truly an honor to receive an award that recognizes achievement across a lifetime. I am pleased that my efforts have been seen to make some difference that translates to better care for patients, through the students I’ve taught and the research activities of which I have been part.”
A Chicago native, Callen earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison before earning his medical degree from the University of Michigan, where he also performed residencies in internal medicine and dermatology.
In 1977, Callen joined the faculty at the University of Louisville, attaining the rank of professor in 1988 and being appointed as chief of the Division of Dermatology the same year. He served on the Board of Directors of the Dermatology Foundation from 1983-88; the American Academy of Dermatology from 1994-98 and 2003-04 as vice president; and the Association of Professors of Dermatology Inc. since 2003. He was the chair of the Council on Education of the American Academy of Dermatology 2003-07. He has been a member of the board of the American Board of Dermatology and is its current vice president. He was president of the Medical Dermatology Society 2005-06 and also currently on the Board of Directors of the American Dermatologic Association. Locally Callen has served on the boards of the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family and Vocational Services, Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Kentucky Arts and Crafts Foundation and the Speed Art Museum.
Callen is the author or co-author of 78 original articles, 172 case reports, 144 review articles, 30 editorials, 10 books, more than 150 book chapters and 140 abstracts. He is the current associate editor of the Archives of Dermatology, deputy editor of Journal Watch Dermatology and editor in chief of the Dermatology Section of UpToDate. He has been visiting professor at 187 universities, been a guest lecturer at 162 medical society meetings and has delivered 24 named lectures including the 2004 Everett C. Fox Lecture at the American Academy of Dermatology’s summer meeting in 2004. In 2009 he received the Thomas Pearson, Ph.D. Education Award from the American Academy of Dermatology, presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in the educational programs of the organization.
