Six-week festival celebrates ‘Reel Latin America’ Events open Oct. 3 with Brazilian director’s talk, screening

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Several dramas, a crime story, a comedy and a documentary span the lineup of the University of Louisville’s free, public “Reel Latin America” Film Festival Oct. 3-Nov. 14.

    The 26th annual festival, organized by UofL’s classical and modern languages department, offers multiple screenings of seven films in Spanish or Portuguese with English subtitles. Locations will be on UofL’s Belknap Campus as well as Speed Art Museum’s Speed Cinema.

    This year’s offerings are from locations including Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Chile, Panama and Colombia. UofL faculty or staff members with expertise in film or the movies’ social justice themes will introduce some films and lead discussions after the screenings.

    The Oct. 3 schedule includes a showing of the 2019 Brazilian dramatic comedy “Oxen, Foxes and Crocodiles” at 7 p.m. in Swain Student Activities Center’s Floyd Theater, with a post-screening question-and-answer session with its director, Calixto Hakim. Here’s the rest of the lineup:

    • “Birds of Passage,” 7 p.m. Oct.10 and 5 p.m. Nov. 14, Floyd Theater; 1 p.m. Oct. 11, 104W Ekstrom Library
    • “A Translator,” 7 p.m. Oct. 17 and 5 p.m. Oct. 24, Floyd Theater
    • “Red Gringo,” 12:30 p.m. Oct. 27, Speed Cinema; 5 p.m. Nov. 7, Floyd Theater
    • “The Second Mother,” 5 p.m. Oct. 17 and 7 p.m. Nov. 7, Floyd Theater
    • “Panama Canal Stories,” 5 p.m. Oct. 10 and 7 p.m. Nov. 14, Floyd Theater
