LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Historian Ellen Carol DuBois, author of the newly released “Suffrage: Women’s Long Battle for the Vote,” will lecture March 26 at University of Louisville about that topic as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of U.S. women’s voting rights.
The free, public lecture by the noted women’s historian, a history professor emeritus at University of California-Los Angeles, will begin at 6 p.m. in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library. Visitors also can enjoy the opening of the library exhibit “Women’s Activism in Louisville,” created by a women’s history class taught by Katherine Massoth, UofL assistant professor.
The talk is the annual Louis Gottschalk lecture, which the College of Arts and Sciences’ history department hosts to promote the study of history and to honor Gottschalk, a former UofL professor and American Historical Association president.
DuBois also will participate in a noon March 25 roundtable discussion, “Women in the Public Eye: How the History of Women’s Suffrage is Memorialized in Public Spaces,” at The Filson Historical Society, 1310 S. Third St. Panelists will include representatives from UofL, Filson, Frazier History Museum, Kentucky State University and Jefferson County Public Schools.
DuBois is known for her pioneering research in women’s history and for her eight books, including “Harriot Stanton Blatch and the Winning of Woman Suffrage,” for which she won the American Historical Association’s Joan Kelly Memorial Prize in 1998. Other books include “Woman Suffrage and Women’s Rights” and “Feminism and Suffrage: The Emergence of an Independent Women’s Movement in America, 1848-1869.”
Lecture co-sponsors include the Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society, Women’s Center, McConnell Center and the history, political science, anthropology, sociology, comparative humanities and the women’s, gender and sexuality studies departments.
