Applications for projects involving the James Graham Brown Cancer Center and University of Louisville Hospital have progressed to the organization’s final stage, which is online voting for the most support in their regions.

Karen Kayser, the Renato LaRocca endowed chair in oncology social work at the Kent School of Social Work, is collaborating with the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at UofL to bring to Louisville a patient-caregiver support program called Pillars4Life.

The psychosocial team at the Brown Cancer Center is seeking to replicate the program model, developed during a Duke University study, to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients and help hospitals and social workers better attend to the mental health needs of more patients.  Free to patients, the program is designed to improve their coping skills.

Meanwhile, University Hospital’s LIVESTRONG application is for a certification program for advanced palliative care. The certification will provide health care professionals the tools, training and technical assistance needed to start and sustain successful palliative care teams in hospitals and other health care settings.

The voting deadline for both categories is 5 p.m. CT March 23. Participants are allowed to vote for both programs.
