Botswana.

Panama.

Ghana and points all around the world.

UofL students are making it happen all around the globe.

At least 460 students are traveling abroad this summer, including those taking courses at institutions overseas and completing research and service projects.

The number traveling this summer is about 150 more than the previous summer.

The university has made a commitment to expanding study abroad and other international travel opportunities for students. Now, there are more opportunities and more funding available to students.

Any time you can give students a window into the world, it can be transformational, said Stacy Bailey-Ndiaye, interim director of the Muhammad Ali Institute for Peace and Justice at UofL, who is leading a group of Ali Scholars to Ghana this summer. It also helps them understand the United States better when they see it from a different perspective.

The experiences made available to students vary.

Two Cardinal Covenant students are currently in China completing coursework.

In June, a group of fine arts students traveled to Panama and working to empower youth through photography.

And in April, the Office of Student Affairs led a group of students from across the university on a trip to Botswana to educate students in urban schools as part of the International Service Learning Program.

Leslie Conner, a student who went on the trip to Botswana said prior to leaving, that while she would be educating students, it would be just a big lesson for her.

I think I’ll learn more from them than they will from me, she said.
