Echo Press operated in Bloomington, Ind., from 1980 to 1996 and had a notable reputation for excellence and innovation as a printmaking workshop.
Earlier this year, the Hite Art Institute received a gift of 22 important impressions from the overall Echo portfolio. The show is selected from this gift, earlier gifts and purchases of Echo Press editions. It will highlight the work of Steven Sorman and David Shapiro as well as Mark Luyten, Robin Winters, Debra Kass, Georgia Marsh and Rudy Pozzatti.
Pozzatti and master printer David Keister were key to establishing and setting the direction for Echo Press. Their goal was to print and publish quality editions with an emphasis on allowing the artist to stretch the boundaries of printmaking into unique and creative solutions.
Artists’ contributions led to a diverse portfolio of imagery that used many forms of printmaking such as lithography, woodcut and relief printing, combined with collage techniques that allowed the artists to produce very ambitious, largescale prints.
“Whatever has been published was done with great commitment and care, using the best materials, patience, and with the objective of meeting the highest of professional standards,” according to Pozzatti.
The exhibition will run through Saturday, Oct. 26. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. ‒ 6 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. ‒3 p.m.; and First Friday, 11 a.m. ‒ 9 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
