The new inductees were honored during a Feb. 16 ceremony at the Speed Art Museum.
The Hall of Honor recognizes alumni, faculty and others who have made significant, lasting contributions to the college, university, local community and society.
The 2012 inductees are:
- Dario Covi, professor emeritus of fine art. Covi curated the university art collection and exhibitions and continues to maintain its art objects more than two decades after his retirement. A scholar of Italian Renaissance art history, he twice was fine arts department chair and Allen R. Hite Art Institute director and also served as humanities division chair.
- Riffat Hassan, professor emerita of humanities. The former religious studies director is considered a pioneer of feminist theology in the context of Muslim tradition and is founder of the International Network for the Rights of Victims of Violence in Pakistan. The religious scholar directed UofL’s two U.S. Department of State exchange programs exploring Islamic life in the United States.
- Richard Northern, Louisville attorney with Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs. The English and law alumnus was The Louisville Cardinal’s editor and the student member of the committee that oversaw UofL’s entry into the state education system. His civic duties have included leading the Catholic Education Foundation, Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital and the Louisville Redevelopment Authority.
- Sheila Schuster, head of the Kentucky Mental Health Coalition. After earning her UofL doctorate in clinical psychology, she spent 27 years in private practice and was the Kentucky Psychological Association’s first executive director. She heads the Advocacy Action Network and Kentucky Voices for Health and twice was chair of the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.
- Arthur Slavin, professor emeritus of humanities and former College of Arts and Sciences dean. After coming to UofL as dean, he was instrumental in establishing the Pan-African studies and women’s studies programs. A recognized authority on 16th century England, Slavin later served as International Center director and as the Justus Bier distinguished professor of humanities.
