The Speed School of Engineering is part of the prestigious $160 million National Science Foundation National Nanotechnology Network. It is one of only 16 universities nationwide to be part of the network. Other universities include Harvard, Stanford and Duke.

Mary Pat McCallister, manager of Regulatory Affairs in the Department of Radiology, has passed the AAPC compliance certification. The certification demonstrates that you “understand the key requirements needed to effectively develop, implement, and monitor a health care compliance program for your practice based on governmental regulatory guidelines. This includes being knowledgeable in compliance reviews, audits, risk assessments, and staff education and training.”

President Postel hosting open forum on Belknap today; HSC forum is Thursday

Tuesday, Oct.3, 2 p.m., Middleton Theater, Strickler Hall, Belknap Campus

UofL Interim President Greg Postel will host an open forum for the university community today. During the forum, he will take employee input into the future direction of the university. A second forum will be held on the HSC Campus on Thursday, Oct. 5 at noon in the HSC Auditorium. The forums will be livestreamed at http://uofl.me/UL-Video.

Business Services/ULPD Cookout is Wednesday, Oct. 4

Oct. 4, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., outside between ULPD, Commonwealth Credit Union and the parking garage
A cookout will be held Oct. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to welcome back students. Staff and faculty are also welcome. It will include free food (hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, cookies and drinks), as well as music, games and door prizes. The event is sponsored by the UofL Police Department, Business Services, Aramark Dining and Commonwealth Credit Union.

Meeting the health care needs of LGBT older adults

October 31, noon to 1 p.m., HSC Auditorium, Kornhauser Library; Free

The 2017 Pride Week HSC Campus keynote address will feature leading scholar and researcher Noell Rowan, PhD, addressing the unique challenges of the aging LGBT population, the clinical and social needs of LGBT communities and specific strategies professionals can employ to improve the health of LGBT populations, especially in later life. A part of the LGBT Health Certificate and Grand Rounds for the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine; the community also is invited. Lunch provided with registration by the School of Public Health and Information Sciences Student Council.

Biology Dept. Seminar Series Presents Dr. Shizuka Uchida, UofL

October 6, noon, Room 139, Shumaker Building
Uchida, who joined the Cardiovascular Innovative Institute at the University of Louisville in August of 2016, will present “Long Non-Coding RNAs.” Recent studies show that non-coding RNAs are functional as in the case of microRNAs. Although lncRNAs are of great interested in the research community, their functions are largely unknown. Uchida’s talk will highlight his recent work to understand the functions of lncRNAs, by employing both dry (bioinformatics) and wet (biology) laboratory techniques.

Screenings provide your personal health data, including blood pressure, weight, waist/hip measurements, and cholesterol/glucose. Sustainability

Partnership for a Green City Energy Tip 5: Social justice and electricity generation

Most people do not think about the social consequences of generating electricity. There are LG&E power plants at Cane Run (natural gas), Mill Creek (coal) and Trimble County (coal) to supply the energy needs of our community. The families and children who live near the power stations receive the majority of the pollution, particulates and dust emissions. As electricity is directed across the area on the grid, we should be aware of the people who live near the power plants and conserve energy.
