Recent changes made to Kentucky state law regarding youth camps

Those on campus who are responsible for operating, overseeing, or administering youth camps and other programs involving minors on campus need to be made aware of these changes. The state regulation found at 902 KAR 10:040, Section 14 (linked here) requires that any adult wishing to work or volunteer at a covered youth camp secure clearance from the Kentucky human services cabinet to the effect that the person has never been determined by the state to have engaged in abuse or neglect of a child. In addition, a revision to the overarching Kentucky statute (KRS 194A.382) has expanded the scope of offenses for which we must exclude camp staff or volunteers.  In addition to excluding individuals who have been convicted of a sex crime or a crime against children from working at youth camps, as was the case previously, any publicly funded youth camp must exclude any individual convicted of any violent offense, whether or not that offense involved children or was sexual in nature. The form to be used to request the required letter can be found here.  The effective date of these changes is July 1, 2018.  As it is unclear whether or how these changes apply to camps that begin before that date but extend beyond it, compliance with the referenced provisions as soon as practicable is urged.

Belknap parking changes prompted by construction

Parking and Transportation recently announced a number of changes for Fall semester. These changes were prompted by the planned construction of a new residence hall at the corner of Fourth and Cardinal that will displace 328 resident and 132 visitor parking spaces. This project will begin in the middle of the semester so immediate action was needed to inform permit selection. Planning focused on leveraging underutilized areas to ensure adequate resident and visitor parking without excessively inconveniencing other permit holders. A secondary focus was to avoid increasing the number of permit types sharing the same area to reduce tickets and towing. For more information see louisville.edu/parking.

Dept. of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences now offering Lasik opportunity for UofL community

A new program geared toward UofL students, faculty and staff includes a free Lasik/PRK evaluation at the Kentucky Lions Eye Center. Pay half the average rate for Lasik/PRK by only being charged the facility laser fee. The typical surgeon’s fee is waived. Cases start at $675 per eye. The cases are staffed by Dr. Richard Eiferman, who has performed more than 2,000 refractive procedures, and use the latest technology in the industry – the Johnson & Johnson STAR SR IR Excimer Laser. Upcoming changes to the UofL IRB fee schedule and billing process for industry contracts

Safe Zone training for faculty and staff

Want to know more about the LGBT community? Join us for our Safe Zone Ally training with the LGBT Center. During this two-hour training, you will hear from LGBT students about their experiences, engage in issues that impact LGBT people, and self-reflect on what actions you can take as an advocate.
