    DID YOU KNOW

    UofL is participating in the Mayor’s SummerWorks program for the first time this year. The program, first launched in 2011, provides an opportunity for those ages 16 to 21 to earn a paycheck and on-the-job training. UofL has seven SummerWorks 2017 participants working with employees in offices, public areas and grounds. 

     

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    Tasha Tropp Laman, associate professor and director of the Nystrand Center, and Amy Seely Flint, department chair and professor in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, hosted the 19th  annual Kentucky Reading Project (KRP) 10-day summer institute. K-5 teachers with Jefferson County Public Schools learned new strategies for designing a comprehensive and engaging literacy curriculum. Drs. Laman and Flint will facilitate workshops throughout the year, observe classroom practices and prepare teachers to present their literacy action projects at the KRP Share Fair in April 2018.

    Monday, July 24: UofL hosts more than two dozen academic, research and learning camps for kids each summer. The Digital Media Academy for 5th grade girls and a law camp for teens are two of them.

     

    Radio Show

    Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM TheVille; replayed on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Podcasts can be found on SoundCloud. This week’s schedule:
    Monday, July 24: Archivist, historian and retired politician Tom Owen and filmmaker Morgan Atkinson have donated more than 50 hours of interviews with Owen to UofL Archives. UofL grad and Fulbright Scholar Chloe Zoeller on her adventures in Colombia.

    Tuesday, July 25: Psychologist Nick Noles discusses his research on young kids’ reaction to being tracked or tracking others’ belongings in a digital age. Biology professor Michael Menze and engineering professor Jonathan Kopechek are working on a way to turn blood into powder so it can be stored longer. Kentucky has the highest rate of Hepatitis C in the country. Barbra Cave is leading a move to get more Louisvillians tested.

    This week: Detecting Alzheimer’s earlier through images is part of Emily Mason’s research in the Department of Neurological Surgery. Shelby Lawson is a Fulbright Scholar and David Peterson is an American linguist who created fake languages for Star Trek and Game of Thrones TV series, among others.

    President Postel to host open forums

    There will be two open forums hosted by Dr. Postel and are intended for the entire University community. The dates are as follows:

    • July 25, 9 a.m., Belknap campus, Middleton Theater, Strickler hall
    • July 26, 2 p.m., HSC campus, HSC Auditorium

    Welcome Week: Aug. 16-20

    Help First Year Initiatives and our campus and community partners welcome students to UofL. Welcome Week runs throughout five days and more than 50 events are held to assist students in getting acclimated to campus, learning more about university programs and making the personal connections they’ll need to start off strong. The UofL New Cards app includes a full schedule, frequent campus contacts, dining options, campus maps and more. The schedule is also available online.

     

    Poster session of summer undergraduate research

    August 4, noon to 3 p.m., Kosair Charities CTRB Lobby, HSC 

    Undergraduate students will present the results from their 10-week summer research experience. Participants in the Cancer Education R25, IMPACT REU, KBRIN, Physiology Cardiovascular, SROP, and KY-WV LSAMP will present.

    Call for nominations: Josh Smith Memorial Sustainability Award

    Sept. 1 deadline
    UofL’s Sustainability Council is launching an annual award to honor community members’ contributions to our efforts to be better stewards of our planetary, financial and human resources. Josh Smith was a former UofL student who later became a dedicated volunteer for UofL’s composting project. He died unexpectedly in 2015. In honor of Josh, please nominate a community member by Sept. 1 who gives of their time and resources to UofL’s sustainability efforts. A cash prize and plaque will be awarded this fall.

    Belknap Spectrum Cable changes

    Spectrum has changed cable television service for most of the UofL Belknap campus. A cable box is no longer required. If your service has stopped working, you should remove the cable box, attach the cable directly to the TV and rescan the channels to restore the service. Any service issues with cable television should be reported directly to Spectrum rather than UofL IT.

    Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society’s Distinguished Lecturer

    Sandra L. Hanson, Professor of Sociology, Catholic University, Washington, DC, will speak on, “Girls in Science: Why So Few?” Does diversity in science result in better science? Are we creating more interest and opportunities for girls and women in science in the U.S.? How do we compare to other countries? What are the barriers? Why do they continue? Cross-national patterns of gender equity in science are discussed with the goal of finding factors that contribute to the encouragement of all youth in science.

    Training and Workshops

    iRIS grant submission training offered by Office of Research Integrity

    “An Introduction to Grant Submissions in iRIS” aims to provide an understanding of getting into the iRIS system and navigating through the eProposal form and Sponsor Packets. The target audience is staff and faculty who plan to seek funding through any granting agency. Training for units as a group is also available, on request. Sessions are:

    Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste training

    July 26, 9-11 a.m., Room 2034, KWING/ School of Nursing, HSC Campus
    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years and may be completed in Bioraft (online refresher training). Bring employee/student ID number to sign in. Attendees can pre-register online, however advanced registration is not required.

    Carnosine for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Study

    The UofL Health Sciences Center is seeking PAD patients between age 50-80 with and without claudication to determine whether Carnosine/Placebo supplementation for 6 months improves walking ability.
