    DID YOU KNOW

    The UofL Women’s Center started in 1992. It now has 85 participating students, many through its six student groups, and hosts 52 events a year while also raising $25,000 a year for student programming.

     

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    Two employees from UofL’s Office of Communications and Marketing earned awards for their entries at the Kentucky State Fair. Judy Hughes received first place for a double-wall basket and second place for a ribbed basket, both in the hobbies category. Maria Tinnell received second place for hot pepper jelly in the culinary category, second place for a miniature basket under 4 inches in the hobbies category, and honorable mention for another basket.

    Monday, August 28: Hundreds of Kentucky State Fair received free cancer or health screenings from UofL Health. For some, it was decision that could save their life.

    North Information Center visitor lot to close for special events

    Sept. 1, Sept. 29, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 
    The visitor lot located at the North Information Center will be closed for special events during the two dates listed above. Additional parking options on these dates will be to purchase a $5 temporary parking permit from the parking website or to utilize any pay facility on campus, Floyd Street garage or the 4th & Cardinal lot.

    Processing Charlottesville

    August 30, noon to 1 p.m., Room 2006, School of Nursing K-wing, Health Sciences Center
    As the nation reels from the violence of the events in Charlottesville, people around the nation and at the HSC are experiencing a variety of emotions. This event will provide an open discussion of how individuals and society are feeling post-Charlottesville, and to consider what we can do with these emotions.     Commonwealth Credit Union Kentuckiana Heart Walk fundraiser

    2126 S. Floyd St. (near ULPD and University Parking offices)
    In the past 6 years, UofL has raised more than $226,000 for the American Heart Association Heart Walk. Commonwealth Credit Union has joined us in this year’s fundraising and awareness-raising efforts and is selling paper hearts, which will be displayed in their UofL or Frankfort Avenue branch. Donate $1 or more and you’ll also be entered for a chance to win football tickets.

    RAI librarians help students with research projects

    The Research Assistance and Instruction office offers one-on-one appointments to students seeking help with research projects. Librarians help students find, evaluate and incorporate the best sources, including credible statistics and peer-reviewed articles. Find a librarian by specialty online.     Kentuckiana Heart Walk pep rallies scheduled

    The 25th Annual Kentuckiana Heart Walk is scheduled for Sept. 23. Pep rallies will be held to provide people with more opportunities to become involved in the event. All HSC Team Captains and Walkers will meet Aug. 31 at noon at the Kornhauser Library and Commons Building, HSC Auditorium. Please RSVP by Aug. 28 via email.

    LGBT Health Certificate starting September 22

    The LGBT Center is proud to offer cutting-edge training to students and professionals. Most modules in the “LGBT Health Certificate” are offered online, however, one in-person Patient Simulation session is required. Join us for a highly effective learning experience in which members of the LGBT community meet with participants in small groups to provide practice taking scenario-based sexual and social histories.

    Symposium on Community Engagement in Clinical Research

    August 30, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., HSC Campus – Clinical Translational Research Bldg.

    Join us for a day to help build clinical researchers’ knowledge and skills in the concepts, practices, and ethics of community engagement in research. Hosted by the Kentucky Pediatric IDeA Grant Research Center (K-PIRC), partnering with the UofL Commonwealth Institute of Kentucky (CIK). This course is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 credit.

    Histology Basics Seminar

    SBIR/STTR Phase I Workshop

    The Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation (KSEF) is organizing a one-day SBIR/STTR Phase I Workshop on August 29. The workshop includes an overview of the SBIR/STTR programs, recent changes to the programs, and a four-step process for developing a competitive Phase I proposal.

    Did you know there are three types of Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) associated with a NIH grant award? If you said “Annual, Interim, & Final RPPRs,” way to go.     Cardinal Core Program implementation and course development workshops

    The General Education Curriculum Committee (GECC) would like to remind faculty of the upcoming November 1 deadline for all Cardinal Core course proposals. The new Cardinal Core Program becomes effective Summer 2018. Course development workshops will be offered September 1 (2-4 p.m., CEHD 201G) and September 8 (1-2:30 p.m., CEHD 201G).     Junior Faculty: Application deadline extended for the seminar on teaching for new faculty

    The application deadline for the 2017-18 Seminar on Teaching for New Faculty has been extended to Friday, September 1. This yearlong cohort program is designed to jump-start junior faculty members’ teaching careers by providing a rich foundation in evidence-based teaching strategies and research-based principles to foster student learning.

    Green Tip: Convene with interdisciplinary researchers at the Sustainability Roundtable

    UofL’s Sustainability Council hosts the Sustainability Roundtable to bring researchers from all disciplines together around a variety of interdisciplinary topics that have potential for collaboration through joint grant proposals & investigations.
