    Gerald Dryden, MD, MSPH, UofL GI, is the author of this month’s cover article in Innate Immunity. His article is titled, “Immunopathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease: how genetics link barrier dysfunction and innate immunity to inflammation.”

    Research DIY helps students with research projects

    Ekstrom Library
    The Libraries recently launched Research DIY, an online service to help students master many difficult research tasks and use the library effectively. It features unique, visually appealing infographics, short videos, and other materials to help students generate a good research question, find primary sources and use statistics, among other tasks. Consider including the link in syllabuses.

    FirstBuild MegaHackathon: Hack the Home

    September 9, FirstBuild makerspace, 333 East Brandeis; $5 per person
    Teams in FirstBuild’s 2017 MegaHackathon will spend September 9-10 trying to “Hack the Home” at the makerspace and microfactory, on the University of Louisville’s Belknap campus. FirstBuild, backed by Haier’s GE Appliances, expects more than 300 participants to help create the next generation of home appliances. Teams will be competing for cash and prizes.

    UofL employee up for Mrs. America crown; voting available online

    Tyiana Thompson, a UofL employee, is competing in the Mrs. America pageant Aug. 26 in Las Vegas. Voting is now underway for delegates in this competition. Anyone who wishes to cast a vote for Thompson can do so through Aug. 21 online. The delegate with the most votes will automatically advance to the top 15 to compete in finals.

     

    UofL Florence Nightingale Awards in Nursing

    Do you know an outstanding nurse from Kentucky or Southern Indiana? Nominate registered nurses for the fourth-annual UofL Florence Nightingale Awards in Nursing. Nominations can be made online and the deadline is Sept. 7.

     

    Research!Louisville 2017: Call for Abstracts

    September 11-15 Kosair Charities Clinical and Translational Research Building, Health Sciences Center

    Faculty, post-docs, research associates, residents, clinical fellows, research staff, PharmDs, graduate and professional students are invited to submit an abstract on their life science research for a poster presentation at Research!Louisville.     Calling for medical student and resident volunteers

    September 13, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Kentucky Science Center; Free
    Research!Louisville: A Med School preview for biomedical students, UME, GME and L-WIMS, are partnering with the Kentucky Science Center for this fun event. Middle school and high school students practice some real medical content and meet students, residents, and faculty, and may consider a career in medicine.

    Sending secure university email – IT has new provider, process

    Information Technology is expanding their use of ProofPoint to increase the security of the University’s email system. On Wednesday, August 16, IT will initiate ProofPoint’s Encryption Secure Send to replace the old Cisco secure email solution. Users should recognize ProofPoint as our anti-malware and spam/phishing filter but need to be aware of the new procedure for sending and receiving secure, encrypted emails. Please check the IT website for new information.

    Junior Faculty: Seminar on Teaching for New Faculty applications due

    Applications are due for the 2017-18 Seminar on Teaching for New Faculty on Friday, August 25. This yearlong cohort program is designed to jump-start junior faculty members’ teaching careers by providing a rich foundation in evidence-based teaching strategies and research-based principles to foster student learning.

    Graduate students in psychology, medicine, nursing, and social work needed as survey participants

    We are interested in the clinical decision-making of graduate students in clinical/counseling psychology, medicine, nursing, and social work who have had some clinical experience with a client/patient. The online survey should take about 15 minutes. Those who complete the survey may enter in a drawing to win an iPad. Take the survey online.

     

    Adolescent MDD/Depression 12 to 17 Years Old

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Norton Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study evaluating the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug in adolescents ages 12 to 17 years old who have MDD or feelings of depression. If your child is eligible his or her participation will last approximately 10 weeks, including nine visits to the study site, which compensation for time and travel is provided.

    Drug resistant epilepsy and ASD/ CBDV oil 4 to 18 years old

    Dr. Gregory Barnes, MD, PhD and KCPCRU are conducting a research study evaluating the safety and effectiveness of an investigational CBDV (Cannabidivarin) Oil in children ages 4 to 18 years old who have Drug Resistant Epilepsy and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The study consists of 3 (1 overnight) screening clinical visits within 28 days. If your child is eligible his or her participation will be a duration of 52 weeks which includes up to 18 (1 overnight) study clinic visits.
