    DID YOU KNOW
    UofL Senior Natalie Brown of Crestwood, Kentucky, was named the 2017 Kentucky Derby Festival Queen last week during the annual Fillies Derby Ball. Brown is a Communications major, Trustees Scholar and Honors Scholar and serves on the Student Orientation Staff and as a Cardinal Ambassador. She is also co-host of The L Show and volunteers for Heuser Hearing Institute with Delta Zeta Sorority.
     
    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES
    Daniella Terson de Paleville, assistant professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, and Jason Immekus, associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development, work with a team of UofL students, four undergraduates and four graduates, at Hawthorne Elementary, a Spanish Immersion school. The goal of this ongoing project is to explain the link between physical activity, academic skills and classroom behavior in children 5 to 10 years old.
     
     
    Miscellaneous
    Electrical shutdowns scheduled Saturday on Belknap
    The second of three planned electrical shutdowns is scheduled for this coming Saturday, April 15 and will impact some buildings on Belknap Campus. Facilities Management is working to replace underground cables and equipment. From 6-7 a.m., the Thrust Theatre, Ralph Wright Natatorium, Floyd Street Parking Garage, Department of Public Safety, and Commonwealth Credit Union will be without regular power. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Chemistry Building, Lutz Hall, Houchens Building and the Service Complex will be without regular power. ULPD is aware of all buildings impacted. Physical Plant will have staff on duty during the shutdown to address any problems experienced. While no impact is anticipated for the rest of campus, everyone on Belknap should exercise caution to protect all electrical assets.
     
    2017 Presidential Exemplary Multicultural Teaching Award

    The deadline for nomination submissions is May 12; the deadline for candidate’s form and statement is May 12. The Presidential Exemplary Multicultural Teaching Award is designed to affirm, value, honor, and recognize members of the University teaching staff who incorporates multicultural and global perspectives into their scholarship, teaching practices and research; accepts the educational principles that cultural literacy should be infused into the core of scholarly research and that education transmits the cumulative knowledge of human kind reflected in a global society.

    2017 Presidential Exemplary Multicultural Engagement Staff Award
    May 12
    Deadline for the submission of nominations is May 12; Deadline for the submission of the Candidate’s form and statement is May 12. The purpose of this award is to recognize a part or full-time staff member who has demonstrated through their organization, leadership, and mentoring, the ability to promote the value of diversity and inclusion within the university setting. The winner of this award should demonstrate merit not based only on the functions of his or her job, but also on extraordinary commitment beyond what would be considered satisfactory levels of job performance.

    Apply now for Delphi U Online Summer 2017

    The Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning announces an online course to prepare instructors to teach online-Delphi U Online. The summer offering will launch June 12 and conclude August 6. Participants will learn two primary concepts: What it is like to be an online learner and how to effectively teach online. This is for full and part-time faculty planning to teach a new fully online course or enhance an online course between Fall 2017 and Fall 2018. Registration is now open and positions are limited.

    April Showers bring puppies and kittens
    Houchens & Dental School
    Spring brings many unwanted animals into shelters & rescues. Many of these animals die needless because there are not enough resources. We are collecting for Louisville Metro Animal Services to help out with puppy and kitten season. Any donation will help. There will be a drop off locations at Belknap and HSC. We have fliers available with a list of needs that can be picked up or emailed.

    Miracle Monocle, UofL’s online literary journal, invites you to attend a special reading of selections from its latest issue.     The McConnell Center’s “Promises & Perils of the American Presidency” public lecture series concludes with a talk from Peter Zeihan, a strategist on global affairs and geopolitics. Author of “The Accidental Super Power: The Next Generation of American Preeminence and the Coming Global Disorder,” Zeihan argues that the U.S. will become great again – more by luck than by design – under a new presidential administration.     Bioengineering Dept. Seminar Series: ‘Engineering Metabolism to Improve Cardiac Health’
    April 12, noon to 1:30 p.m., Ernst Hall, Room #310
    Brad Hill, assistant professor of Medicine at UofL, will discuss the role of glucose metabolism in cardiac physiologic growth as well as introduce new concepts regarding gluconeogenic activity in the heart, which may regulate cardiomyocyte health, proliferation, and repair.
